Varieties of powder paint sprayers (pistols)

For painting metal products with powder paint, powder paint sprayers (pistols) are used. It can be both for manual application and for automatic powder coating lines.

Spraying process

Paint is applied to the prepared metal surface with a gun. During spraying, paint particles receive an electrical charge from an external source or become electrified by friction. It is thanks to the electric field that the paint particles adhere to the metal, which has the opposite charge.

Types of spray guns

Let’s take a look at what types of spray guns are. Usually there are 2 types of pistols:

• electrostatic gun;
• tribostatic pistol.

Electrostatic Powder Coating Gun

The electrostatic gun produces ultra-thin coatings ranging from 30 to 250 microns. Thanks to this gun, you can process products of any shape. Also with this gun you can use any kind of powder paint (metallic, antique, etc.).

In this case, the spray gun is connected to a power source and charges the powder. At the exit from the barrel there is a needle – a corona electrode. The product to be painted is suspended and grounded in the spray chamber. The painter must also be grounded by hand contact with the bracket on the pistol grip. It is very important to work without gloves. Then an electrostatic field is created between the electrode and the workpiece. Compressed air is supplied to the gun, the air-powder mixture enters this field and is charged. The charged powder evenly covers the grounded product.

Tribostatic powder gun

A feature of such a sprayer is the ability not to connect it to the mains. The charge in it is formed due to the friction of paint particles on the barrel of the gun. This is what makes it safe to use, simplifies work, and increases its service life. Thus, already charged particles fly out of the trunk and the charged powder evenly covers the grounded product.

But the charge power with this method is much weaker.

Advantages of the tribostatic pistol:

• covering speed up to 1 sq.m. in a minute;
• easily applies paint to products with complex shapes.

Personal protective equipment

Although powder paint is an environmentally friendly material, you shouldn’t forget about personal protection. Mandatory for use are: glasses, a respirator and special clothing with long sleeves.
