Equipment for painting car rims

Car wheels have been painted with powder paint for years, already. So far, there is no better alternative than this material. Only a powder coating can make discs as resistant to temperature changes, moisture, sun, reagents sprinkled on roads in winter, as well as impacts, scratches and abrasions.

These advantages allow the discs to have a normal appearance even under constant use in difficult conditions.

Powder coating differs from traditional liquid paints and varnishes. It requires special equipment. It is impossible to paint car wheels on your own at home.

Powder Coating Line

Large workshops can allocate an entire room for a powder coating line of car rims. And if the workshop has a lot of customers this is justified and pays off first.

In small workshops, you can simply separate a small area of the main room, fence it off a little and install small-sized equipment there. This is enough for painting car rims.

Powder painting takes place in several stages: preparation of the product, painting and baking. Each stage requires its own equipment. In order to exclude contact between the operator and the product during paint application, the equipment is connected with a transport system. This helps to avoid defects caused by human factors.

Preparing disks

This is the main step in powder painting. The product preparation quality determines how evenly and firmly the powder lays on the surface.

During preparation, oils, dust, old paint, rust and other contaminants are removed from the product. The surface is degreased and completely dried.

Preparatory stage requires sandblasting equipment on the powder coating area, special pretreatment baths and a drying chamber.

Paint application

The essence of powder coating is the electrification of paint particles that are deposited on the product due to the effect of an electric field.

Therefore, a special spray chamber and a spray gun are required for powder appliance.

The product is suspended in the chamber and charged. The gun sprays paint and transfers the powder particles an opposite charge. Thus, the paint is “magnetized” to the product. Therefore, ordinary sprayers or atomizers are not suitable for this.

There are tribostatic and electrostatic sprayers. The first one charges the particles by friction, the second one connects to the network and forces the powder to be charged. Tribostatic sprayers are used mainly for dyeing products of complex shapes; the coloring procedure is quite long. Electrostatics works faster, but it is convenient to use them to paint products of a simple form.

Paint particles that do not immediately settle on the surface are filtered and can be reused. This makes powder painting very economical and waste-free.

Baking powder paint on discs

The baking or polymerization of powder paint takes place in a polymerization oven.

The paint applied product is immersed in the oven for 10-30 minutes. It depends on the type, size and power of the camera. While the powder melts a film forms and hardens.

As usual compact ovens are used to paint car rims. They can paint  4 discs in a row.

After baking in a polymerization oven the discs can be mounted on the car immediately.
