Powder paint consumption for metal

Powder paint can be used to cover a variety of metal products: profiles, medical equipment, fences, mesh netting and even self-tapping screws. As a rule, powder consumption is minimal. Nevertheless, it varies due to the painted item.

A quick example: paint application for roof deck boards per square meter will be less than for mesh painting. Because it is easier to apply powder on a flat and uniform surface, particles will not fly in different directions, fly through the product.

Powder paint consumption per square meter

The exact powder consumption can be determined in practice, only. Lots of factors should be taken into account. We will talk about them below.

But it is possible to determine a preliminary approximate consumption figure. As a rule, the manufacturer of the powder paint indicates it on the package.

You can calculate it yourself: multiply the thickness of the paint layer by the specific gravity of the powder.

Typically, the consumption of powder paint for painting flat surfaces without holes varies between 150-180 grams. And on products of complex shapes, the consumption can increase 2-3 times.

But remember that it’s not just the weight and thickness of the coating that affect

consumption.

What affects the consumption of powder paint

Powder paint consumption is affected by:

  1. Powder composition and particle size. The smaller the particles, the lower the paint consumption. The flowability of the paint is also important.

  1. Paint type. The consumption of smooth paint will be less than shagreen or crocodile leather. For the texture to appear you need a thicker layer.

  1. Specific weight of paint. The smaller it is, the lower the consumption will be. Particles size of the powder directly affects the specific weight.

  1. Coating layer thickness. The thicker the layer should be, the more paint will be applied. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the optimal thickness for the painted product.

  1. The quality of product preparation. The better the metal is cleaned and prepared for painting, the less paint will be spent. Because of bad cleaning, paint may not adhere well to some places, so you will have to use more powder.

  1. Product shape. Any seams, bends, complex details, holes will increase paint consumption. For high-quality painting requires a larger amount of dye.

Also, do not forget about the professionalism of the painters. If this is done by an experienced person and deep knowledge in the field of powder coating, then the paint consumption will be minimal.

How to reduce paint consumption

For less consumption of powder in metal products painting a good equipment is required.

If a spray chamber is installed in the production, it will collect powder particles that have not settled on the product and can be used again. The consumption can still be large if the powder is applied with a hand spray. After all, the human factor has not been canceled.

Human error can be minimized with fully automatic spray lines that can accurately control layer thickness. They will help to reduce paint wastу to the lowest rates.

And one more important point is preparation. The paint consumption of poorly cleaned products will be higher. It is not possible to clean the surface perfectly by hand. That is why the automatic painting lines should be equipped with baths for preliminary preparation. The professional equipment can deeply optimize all production processes.

If you need to paint a little and infrequently then make a proper calculation for expense to be reasonable.
