For a long time, the scope of application of powder paint was rather narrow. But due to its special characteristics, it is increasingly used for painting a wide variety of products.
It is a convenient, fast and environmentally friendly way to get a high-quality and even coating.
However, at home, it is impossible to paint products in this way. And all because you need a special tool for powder painting. In particular, the spray gun, which we will talk about today.
Large industries usually use automatic painting lines. They speed up and simplify the painting process. But smaller companies can use a conventional hand held spray gun.
What is it for and how does a spray gun work?
A spray gun, or just a powder paint gun, is necessary in order to spray powder onto a product suspended in a spraying chamber, while obtaining a high-quality, uniform coating without defects.
There are two types of spray guns: tribostatic and electrostatic. We wrote about them in detail in our article earlier. Note that you do not need to buy additional equipment for the first type of spray guns. And for the electrostatic type, an external generator is needed.
The gun for powder paint allows you to apply a uniform layer of coating not only on flat surfaces, but also on embossed ones.
The principle of its operation is to electrify powder particles that fall on the surface of the product due to the electric field and settle on it. Then, using a polymerization oven, the paint forms a bright and highly durable coating.
In addition to electrifying the powder, compressed air is very important for the operation of the gun. It passes through the spray gun and, together with the paint, flies out through the nozzle.
A spray gun of any type must have a converter, a hopper, buttons, handles, a fitting, an indicator, a power supply, a handle.
Spray gun safety
Despite the complete environmental friendliness of the paint and the ease of use of pistols, a lot of attention should be paid to the safety of operation of this equipment.
- Make sure that ventilation works well in the room.
- Check that the gun is working properly and is grounded, especially for electrostatic models.
- Be sure to wear protective clothing, goggles, gloves, rubber-soled shoes.
- Check the insulation of the equipment from time to time.
- Do not paint the product near fire or in high temperature rooms.

Spray gun selection
When choosing a spray gun for painting a car or other items, you should take into account the production features and characteristics of both types of pistols.
Electrostatic guns can successfully spray all types of paints. Tribostatic powders work best with combined quality powders.
The former produce up to 20 kilograms of paint per hour, the latter up to 12.
However, we emphasize that tribostatic pistols are much better and more evenly spray paint on complex objects. But humidity has a detrimental effect on them. We wrote more about how to choose a spray gun here.
