Spray gun use: problems, causes and elimination methods

If you have a powder coating workshop or you are thinking about it, you’d better figure out everything about the equipment. Especially about hand spray guns.

Handguns differ in the following criteria.

Charge method:

electrostatic;
tribostatic.

Powder mixture feeding method:

embedded in hopper;
with the supply of paint from the box;
with dye supply from the outer hopper.

Though guns differ from each other they have typical problems for users. And today we will analyze the problems, causes and methods of elimination.

Problems	Possible reason	Elimination method
Weak flame / no flame with normal air supply	Clogged channels of the ejector and air path	Disconnect the high-voltage converter, disconnect the connector, remove the hopper, unscrew the ejector, purge the channel with air. Sift and dry powder paint.
The sprayed powder does not precipitate	Air pressure is higher than acceptable	Adjust the airflow using the regulator on the sprayer body
	There is no reliable contact with the “ground” of the sprayed part	Clean the suspension, if it is impossible to replace
	Working with “antiques”, “metallic” the barrel is clogged with metal particles of powder	Clean the barrel by blowing compressed air and a cleaning rod
The lamp on the gun barrel is off	The power supply is out of order	Replace or repair the power supply
	The reed switch is out of order	Replace the reed switch
	The trigger plate with a magnet is deformed	Bend the spring until the malfunction is eliminated or replace the trigger
	The barrel is out of order	Replace barrel
The trigger “sticks” (if the trigger is not pressed, the lamp on the gun barrel is on)	The reed switch is out of order	Replace the reed switch
	The trigger spring with a magnet is deformed	Bend the spring until the malfunction is eliminated
The bubbling does not work	Clogged air supply channel for bubbling	Remove the hopper from the handle, unscrew the bubbling adjustment knob, clean the hole with a thin wire
Shocks	No contact of the operator’s hand with the metal grounding bracket on the handle / Malfunctioning trigger or reed switch	Make contact: press your finger to the clip, clean the clip if it gets dirty, make a hole in the glove Check the trigger and reed switch operation: when the trigger is released, the barrel charge indicator should go out. If it does not go out, check the operation of the reed switch (open the plate with the magnet and the reed switch, the light should go out). In case of malfunction, replace the reed switch. If the reed switch is working properly, adjust the trigger (clean, bend the trigger plate with the magnet until the malfunction is eliminated).
