This also applies to metals. When it comes to coating with liquid paint, the preparation also includes several layers of primer, which will further allow the paint to adhere better to the surface and ensure reliable adhesion. However, in the case of powder paint, there is no need for unnecessary movements. It is enough just to clean the metal from the remnants of the previous material, dirt or greasy stains. While solvents are good at handling oily contaminants, larger problems can be easily resolved by shot blasting.

Powder paint is an ideal coating for metal. It’s economical, eco-friendly and looks mega cool. In addition, it does not change its appearance for years and reliably protects the metal surface from damage or corrosion. But the peculiarity is the method of its application. Paint powder is sprayed over the product. These are already prepared polymer particles, which later turn into a continuous coating. But stop! They need to be charged first.

Powder particles are charged. For this, either tribostatic or coronary spray guns are used. They do this magical work. Next, it remains to set up the equipment and observe how the paint flying out of the sprayer, like a magnet, is attracted to the metal surface, covering it tightly. Then the product is placed in a polymerization oven, where the paint is melted and solidified. As a result, we have a durable, reliable coating.

This process will be useless if you skip the surface treatment process. In the event that foreign particles remain on the product, the coating will not be able to be made properly so that it fulfills all its functions. At first glance, a coating created properly and with a violation of technology will be no different. For example, suppose there were no defects during polymerization. But how good the adhesion will be, or whether the coating will deteriorate very quickly, we can only know after a certain time. Namely – during operation. And as a result – customer complaints about poor quality coverage. But all this can be avoided if you follow the rules of application and do not skip the processing steps. And more about him.

The preparation and processing stage consists of two important points: degreasing and machining.

Degreasing

This process helps to break down any greasy compounds on the surface and allows the paint to adhere better. Since the coloring particles are made of resinous materials, that is, polymers that, when in contact with fat, will repel each other, a film forms during ink melting, but not everywhere it will reliably and tightly adhere to the surface. In the future, in these places there will be just an air bubble, from where the process of oxidation and rusting of the surface will begin. Immersion in simple alcohol solvents will help alleviate this minor problem.

Mechanical restoration

But not all dirt can be scraped off so easily. For example, sanding residues, dirt, or worse – previous paint residues and rust are the best friends of surface imperfections. But they firmly hold on to it and you can get rid of them thanks to mechanical cleaning. The best option for this is shot blasting.

Shot blasting

Shot blasting is a specific but effective cleaning method. For this, metal balls (shot) are used. It is also often referred to as abrasion. These balls are fed at high speed and under high air pressure to the product and literally grind any contamination. The scope of application is very wide and almost everywhere pursues the processes of painting with powder paint. This is the automotive industry, and the manufacture of equipment, shipbuilding, the manufacture of building materials and interior decor elements.

To perform this type of cleaning, you need the proper equipment – a shot blasting machine. It consists of an abrasive supply and recovery system, a dust and dirt filtration and collection system, and a control and monitoring system. All elements of the system are integral.

What grit should be used to roughen the surface and improve adhesion?

Various materials are used to make shot. Usually their use depends on the type of contamination and the strength of the material. After all, abrasives should not erase or damage the surface, but, on the contrary, level it and make certain small indentations, barely visible to the eye, which improve the adhesion of paint to the surface.

Защита

Since we are dealing with small metal particles that, under high pressure, are capable of leaving scars on a metal surface, it is important to consider the degree of danger for the craftsman. There are automated systems in which the robot does all the work and just needs to be protected from dust and dirt. But most of these installations require human intervention to ideally direct the shot to the contamination. Therefore, the master must be reliably protected: goggles, protective suit and other necessary means that will help to avoid injuries usually arising from negligence or disorder in the system.

There is no such material that does not require additional preparation – processing and cleaning. Do not forget about this step if you want to create a quality finish. The best preparation for a surface that is noticeably dirty is shot blasting. This type of mechanical cleaning is perfect for the task and will help you create the very coating that will last for decades.

Each material requires careful preparation for painting.
